Most people think I'm insane when I tell them I shop for Christmas gifts at garage sales. And some garage sales are full of overpriced garbage. But some have some really nice (even new) stuff for very little money. And if you need some gag gifts, this is a great place to get them!
This summer I found a garage sale. It was close to lunchtime when the sales close down and I bought a huge bag of clothes for Doodlebug. The man was trying to get rid of anything and everything so he would not have to haul it all to Goodwill in the next hour or so. I asked him to throw in a Christmas reindeer tie (almost new, because people rarely wear this stuff) and a small stuffed reindeer and he did. Two stocking stuffers for free.
At another garage sale I found a handmade wooden rubber band gun. We have a 14 year old nephew who really likes this kind of stuff. For $.50 I took it home. I added a couple of rubber bands and had something fun to give him.
When I asked for Christmas suggestions for our nephews this year they told us gift cards or Wii games. We were getting ready to give a super tiny gift card since we thought we couldn't afford a Wii game. And then I hit another garage sale at 11:40. Twenty minutes before they close down they are giving great deals. With one Wii game left I got it for $7. True it is used, and this may bother some people. We figured a 14 year old won't care and his mom even said she was going to buy him used games. It seems like a better present than a $7 gift card to a store where he won't even be able to afford a pair of socks.
